I had the pleasure of working with aerial specialist Tabb Firchau on a Vincent Laforet surfing piece "J.O.B. First Look" in Hawaii in 2009.

To see this technology in action and the focus required to fly one of these awesome machines is very impressive. But what's even more incredible is to review the dailies it produces.

Travel Channel "Hidden City NYC"

The cold hands of winter have firmly wrapped themselves around NYC tonight, but I'm excited to stay in this evening to watch the premiere of "Hidden City New York," hosted by Marcus Sakey at 9PM EST on the Travel Channel.

"Hidden City" explores the history of several cities throughout the U.S. through the crime stories of the late 1970s and early 1980s. God knows NYC has a couple of noteworthy tales to throw into the mix. It was cool to work on the show and I had the pleasure of creating all of the time lapse footage.

All of the time lapse for this episode was created using a Canon 5D Mk II, Sachtler CF 100 M tripod, intervalometer, and a motion control head for the tilt and pan moves. Over the course of three days I created 25 various shots from the Financial District to Harlem, and in most situations I travelled by bike. In post production I managed all of the files using Adobe Bridge and FinalCut Pro in order to deliver the production house a .mov file as reference.

I can't wait to see how the show was edited.

Time Lapse Reel

I've been sitting on some of my recent time lapse footage and decided to edit together a short reel of my favorite shots. Many of these clips have been used in work for the Travel Channel and several corporate shoots for Cisco Systems. Time lapse photography often presents challenges - early mornings after a 14 hour day or tough weather conditions (cold or hot). However they are often my favorite images from a shoot and I look forward to capturing more complex shots using rail systems and more advanced rigs in the future. I hope you enjoy.

EMMY Win! PBS Documentary "Hecho A Mano"

"Hehco A Mano" won an Emmy on Saturday night in Ft. Lauderdale for Historical and Cultural Programing from the National Academy of Arts and Sciences, Suncoast Chapter.

This is my first PBS documentary as the Director of Photography for Common Machine Production and I'm proud to be part of such a great short film. "Hecho A Mano," was the culmination of many hours of sweat equity on everyone's behalf and the beautifully candid stories of the main characters.

Art Basel Miami 2011 - Hit Record and Don't Look Back!

Tomorrow I hit the record button for two weeks of work in Miami centered around the annual art show, Art Basel Miami. It's great to be in the old neighborhood and this is without a doubt my favorite time of year in the 305. I am shooting a variety of projects focussing on the artists and exhibitions that will be taking place here, and tomorrow is the kickoff with a video piece on RETNA, a well known visual artist from Los Angeles that is producing a large scale piece in the design district.

While preparing for my shoot tomorrow I watched the following trailer for "Here Comes The Neighborhood" documentary project which highlights the stunning and abundant murals that have flourished in the Wynwood neighborhood of Miami. It's really well done and my hat goes off to the film makers and shooters. Constructed in 2009 for Art Basel Miami, The walls now feature work from over 30 artists including Futura, Shepard Fairey, RETNA, and Kenny Scharf.

A GILT ridden Portrait Shoot

A few weeks ago the style makers and party planners of the national lifestyle collective, GILT Groupe, met at the Hudson Hotel in New York City for their annual sales meeting. GILT asked me to make a series of 80 stylized portraits of executives and reps throughout the day.

This sounded easy enough except for the fact that I had four hours to make the shots. This meant I had 6-10 minutes per person, which is not exactly the type of time you want under normal circumstances, but I accepted the challenge.

My camera of choice for this shoot was the HASSELBLAD H4D-31. I could have selected a Canon 5D or 1Ds MK IV, but I prefer the depth, tones, and most importantly sharpness of the Hasselblad lenses and camera system. 35mm DSLRs are great, but they still don't have the punch of a medium format system. And for me, creating portraits with a medium format camera just feels more natural.

Going this route would not have been possible without an awesome digital tech manning the work station and watching my back. I was lucky enough to grab Mike Isler for the day, which was a good thing considering we ran into a number of technical problems with the camera and Hasselblad software. Shooting with a tight schedule means you have to cover all your bases, have a back-up, and spending the money where it counts to make your life easier.

Organizing hair by and make-up was the key to getting the shoot off to a strong start and staggering the reps. We managed to capture a selection of great shots of each person. Having the client on-site to approve the images for each person was also helpful to keep our momentum.

However, my favorite part of the shoot came the following morning when I took the Hasselblad out for some street shooting. I really enjoy the functionality and ergonomics of the Hasselblad H4D-31. It's controls and autofocus are really quick and I like the positions of the shutter / aperture dials.

All in all... a great day of shooting.

Phantom Camera Shoot - Life at 2000 FPS

Sunday was a definitely a fun day. Yesterday, I had the good fortune to work along side a talented group of professionals that included Director, David Fishel, and Director of Photography, Ian Bloom on a short film born from David's imagination and captured using the Phantom v640.

Pulling focus at a T-Stop of 1.4 and watching the Phantom capture life at 2000 FPS was amazing. Learning the software was equally intriguing from Ian. Shooting at such a high frame rate using an approximate ISO of 200 demanded a large amount of lighting and definitely added to the already toasty temperature of the studio.

The camera was mounted on a Caroni Lambda head via a Z-Jib (also know as a Zero Gravity Boom Arm) that offered DP a number of options to maneuver the camera around the set.

It's always great to work with a talented and able crew that share a passion for a illustrating a good concept especially with such a fun set of toys.

Time Lapse NYC

Like most of the U.S., New York City is currently experiencing a heat wave and for the past three days I've documented this tropical spell while shooting time lapse for a new show to be aired on the Travel Channel.

The production company and crew were great to work with and provided me a enormous amount of freedom to get the shots. I had an opportunity to use the Meade Coronado mount and 497 controller as well as the Orion teletracker.

Both worked extremely well. I am partial to the Orion since I have more experience with this model and can navigate the controller easier.

The rig was mounted on top of a Sachtler ENG 2 D HD tripod with a Video 20 S1 fluid head. I definitely got a workout from carrying this monster set of sticks around NYC, but they provided me a very stable platform to mount the motion controlled head and 5D camera package.

Frankencamera

Tonight I'm gearing up to film a performance for my friend and long time collaborator, Jorge Rubiera and his band, Animal Tropical. They are making their NYC appearance tonight at The Cake Shop in the Lower East Side. Balancing a Paps Blue Ribbon budget and a desire not to spend any more money, I decided to pool together a bunch of loose parts lying around my apartment.

Tonight I created my first Frankencamera (insert thunderbolt and a screaming damsel sound effect here).

The core of the rig is a Zacuto Universal Baseplate, V3, and 12-inch rods ($530). Yep, it's an expensive baseplate, but it comes in very handy for my steadicam operating because it allows you to manipulate the side-side adjustments to help stabilize various cameras and setups. The camera is a Canon 7D ($1400), Canon 24-70mm lens ($1400) with a Zacuto Z-Finder Pro 2 ($375) and the follow focus is the IKAN Follow-Focus Cine-kit ($400). The light is a Bescor LED-70 ($70) and I'm using a small offset bracket from RedRock Micro as a handgrip.

Finally, after realizing that the rig was going to be too heavy for me to handhold the entire performance I decided to use a Manfrotto 244 Magic Arm ($100) and a standard super clamp as a shoulder brace and counter weight.

Sound will be recorded with a Zoom H4N mounted in the back of the room. A line will be either plugged directly into to the Zoom from the sound board or we will have to settle with capturing the ambient sound.

Pros: Perfectly fine to be used as a blunt weapon in the Lower East Side and it didn't cost a thing since I owned the stuff.

Cons: At $4275 Not cheap by any stretch of the imagine and definitely not appropriate for a paying client.

However, it good to know all those episodes of MacGyver didn't go to waste.

I look forward to posting the results of the shoot.

A day on Deerfield Beach, FL, featuring the ProFoto Acute B2 and the photographic work and technique of wedding photographer Tommy Munoz.

Everything went great, my shoes were soaked and we wrapped moments before a downpour. I was shocked by the weight of the pack and thought the battery was actually missing when I lifted the Acute B2 during the shoot.

In the age of extra baggage fees and excessive charges for cases weighing more than 50lbs, you can bet a few of these will be replacing my Pro7Bs on my next shoot.

Weekend GoPro Hero

Ok... GoPro Mr Hero

I decided to finally become a certified scuba diver and it's a shame that I have waited so long. My dive shop, South Beach Dive and Surf in Miami Beach, is a few blocks from my house. The dive destinations were either off the coast of Miami, or we would travel down to Key Largo.

My instructors were very cool and knowledgeable. The prices for the gear and instruction at the shop were very competitive to what I found on-line, so I purchased my equipment there... I say support local businesses when you can.

So, now that I have an excuse to strap a GoPro Hero to my head I decided to make a series of videos documenting my new adventures.

The USS Spiegel Grove served as the backdrop to this video. I spent a little extra time on the edit. Diving from a submarine was definitely not covered in my advanced or nitrox classes.

The Whistler Film

Miami Documentary Premiere

Well, it's not everyday that you shutdown your computer after the workday to attend a movie premiere. It gets even better when you're attending the screening for your own film, and in a few hours "Hecho a Mano" will hit the big screen here in Miami at the Miami Short Film Festival.

Produced by Common Machine Production, this is my first full credit as Director of Photography. Creating this film was a labor of love for everyone involved and I believe it shows in the final piece. I want to congratulate the incredible team of talented folks who made this film what it is:

Collaborations are in my opinion some of the best opportunities to create without the fear of failure, restrictions of a client, or the tensions associated with deadlines. On a recent Sunday afternoon, Jorge Rubiera and I, got together on Miami Beach to create the second installment to the Vintage Mavens online clothing line campaign created by Shareen Sarwar.

We used the 7D and a Bartech wireless focus control on a glidecam for this shoot, and the ISO ranged from 400 - 12,000. Luckily the moon was full that evening which created a beautiful backlight on the water. We used a regular flash light for the fill / gag lighting once the sun went down and the layering effect helped with the digital noise produced from the high ISO.

This is the newest trailer for Jorge Rubiera's feature film "Meniscus."
I've had the pleasure of serving as the Director of Photography since day one.

I love the new look of the film and completely support going black and white. We've also transitioned into shooting the remainder of the film with the Canon 5D and 7D.

The film has taken us a little over a year to shoot and is definitely worth all the effort. Participating in projects like this one is what makes the daily grind worth while. A few more installments and we are off to the festivals.

It's been a great couple of months on the editorial magazine racks. This is my latest portrait of the Mexican group Los Tigres Del Norte as it appears in The New Yorker Magazine this week. The band was very accommodating on an extremely cold night in Homestead, FL. The natural light was terrible, especially at the end of evening, but luckily I had brought a couple of 7Bs to throw-up in the background and the spread of my elinchrom octabank worked great. A big thanks goes out to the bouncer who kept my gear beer free.

My alarm clock jumped started my day at 5 AM for the 13.1 Miami Beach Marathon. My client was looking for a video that highlighted the overall course and the cultural sights along the route and at the finish line. For mobility and ease I loaded my Lowepro Stealth AW II Backpack with my 7D and a variety of lenses and mounted my bike. I used three Fader ND Filters to give me the option to shoot wide open. The race weaved the runners from Miami Beach too Miami and back by one of the main causeways located in the city.

I edited the piece on FinalCut and created the music myself.

Magic Bullet was used to grade the final video.

Off to the races... Cheers.

National Geographic Mag: A Sweet Find at the Airport

Jetways, concourses, and terminals have been a regular theme for 2010 and I often find myself thumbing through the mag racks at the airport. It was a great surprise to come across my first full page spread in the pages of National Geographic. I knew it was going to run, but the payoff really didn't come until that moment. "Hey there Old Yella!"

Rawhide in the Sky

"YEEHAW!" screamed the talent as nearly 15 people dressed in cow costumes stumbled about the Atlanta airport.

It was not easy operating the camera while trying not to breakout into laughter during each take of the "Skip the Stampede"

video we produced for AirTran Airways.

The day was long and the trail was tough but we finally did get those steers corralled on that plane.

Our production company, Common Machine Production, had a great time producing the clip. The video is a response to an ad SouthWest Airlines is running, in which their crazy baggage guys pull up their shirts and flash an AirTran plane.

Up We Go into the Wild Blue Yonder!

On March 9th and 10th Common Machine Production had the opportunity to document 300 Women Aviator Service Pilots (WASP) receive the Congressional Gold Metal at the Capital building in Washington, DC. I ran the cameras, Brett O'Bourke produced, and Jorge Rubiera edited the piece for AirTran Airways who provided an enormous amount of support to the WASP. We had an incredible time and it was really nice to tour DC the night before the ceremony with my trusty M6 and some old TriX 400... love it.

Eyes & Hearts for Haiti Photography Event

It's great to be included in a photography show, and even better to take part in something meaningful. This evening in Miami there will be a great event at Aperture Studios, 385 NE 59 St, http://www.eyesandheartsforhaiti.org/ to raise money for the orphans of Haiti. This is also a great opportunity to aid those tragically affected by the earthquake in Haiti through photography. Everyone attending will have the opportunity to bid on original signed prints from a variety of photographers (some pretty famous) who have donated their work. The online auction and photography show will take place simultaneously until 10 PM. I've donated one of my prints from the Bahamas and hope you get a chance to check out the work at the show.

Art Basel Miami 2009 - Here and Gone

It's that magical time of year in Miami where for one week the cities of Miami and Miami Beach are overrun with art and art enthusiasts from all over the world. The exhibits, installations, events and after parties go nonstop from December 2nd - 6th. The imagery is inspiring and it's great to meet other artists from all around the world. The swanky event also provides an opportunity to polish off the old three piece suit...

The chatter and drinks are always a blast, but it's really all about the art. Like the 4 years prior, this year was a visual orgasm and I was really taken back by the work of dozen of artists. Here are five that come to mind (4 photographers and 1 painter). I wish I could have walked away with all of them.

I'm happy to announce that after 8 days on YouTube the "Behind the Scenes" video for "SINNERS" by Hypernova is just about to break 40,000 views.

I've enjoyed reading all of your comments and appreciate the feedback.

Generally speaking, my main motivations for choosing these tools were my familiarity with Profoto lighting and Canon equipment. Also, the availability of electrical power on location (although we did blow a few circuit breakers on the day of the shoot when all 10 packs were firing), budget, and the ability to control the light sources using the Profoto light modifiers played a major factor in my creative workflow.

Budget... oh yeah! I do realize that 10 Pro 8A Air packs with 20 heads combined with all the goodies would not be cheap to rent, but neither is a grip truck with experienced grips and generators. We saved valuable time using the strobe lighting because it's easier to manipulate and maneuver. Therefore, we were able to execute multiple scenes within the short shooting schedule. Not to mention we had more than 20,000 watts of lighting at our disposal.

Incorporating the cinematic look and fluidity of the steadicam (provided by Michael Fuchs in the Hypernova video) occurred to me after I worked as a steadicam operator in Hawaii on the Vincent LaForet "Jamie O'Brien Experience" shoot back in January using the 5D Mark II.

However, as opposed to contributing to the popular 5D video movement, I wanted to combine the stop-motion feel of animation created by the still camera with flash photography. I also recognized this was the opportunity to create something new with a specific set of tools that were at my disposal.

I've always believed that we never create in a vacuum. We are influenced by a multitude of experiences and stimuli. I saw this project as an opportunity focus my creativity using my skills as a still photographer, steadicam operator, and day dreamer into one clip.

"Estilio Crudo" by Bravo Linguista - Music Video, NSW Australia

Roughly 600 miles of driving throughout New South Wales, Australia delivered my crew and I to Dubbo, a small town nestled between somewhere and nowhere. We scouted, plotted, and shot our video in a hard and hot 32 hours. Our gear was provided by Panavision Cameras and Lighting. We used the Sony F23 (not your average camera, price tag $350,000 for the body alone), and the 4x4x4 uncompressed HD image it produces is ridiculous. As a friend of mine just recently said... "shoots are never perfect" and he would have been right once again here, however our small crew were total PROs and their hilarious jokes helped push us past the 100 degree temps. I want to thank each and everyone of them for their help on this project. Aussies Rock.

Extra Extra! Read all about it... the cool kids at Lostateminor.com (A very sharp, current, and dope website) reports on the opening and happenings of Common Machine Productions. We (Brett O'Bourke, Trip Williams, and myself) are really excited to break our news cherry with such a great site. This just follows the launch of our new website and reel.

This is a great start to a slammed week with back to back shoots (video and stills), which range from photo shoots on human genomics and aquaculture too video work for a major national airlines. Finally, we'll round off the week by shooting a video installment to the upcoming DVD album of the very cool Miami musical group, The Down-Home Southernaires.

CREATIVE LIGHT Photo Shoot

I received word today that my photo shoot for the new CREATIVE LIGHT product line is up and running. The shoot was a lot of fun and I really enjoyed working with our talent, Kim and Lisa.

The final selected imagery will be used for the brochure for CL and the video will live on their blog. This shoot followed an even larger music video shoot that I shoot using a stills camera and 16,000 pics.

It's in the editing room now and I look forward to showcasing it once it's spliced together. In the meantime, I hope you like the video below. Cheers, Richard.

A New Season, New Shoots, & A New Office

The month of May was crazy. Moving apartments, photo shoots for ProFoto (separate post to come soon), a music video with the band "Hypernova" and the opening of my production office and studio, COMMON MACHINE PROD. in Miami, FL with Brett O'Bourke in the Moore Building of the Design District.

COMMON MACHINE PROD. is a documentary film and video production company. Brett O'Bourke, Executive Producer, has produced for Discovery, A&E, Oxygen, and Lifetime. Not to mention he has also held the title of "Editor in Chief" of several print and online magazines, including the Miami - Flavorpill.com.

Also joining our crew in Miami is Director and Editor, Jorge Rubiera. Jorge and I are currently shooting the his feature independent film "Meniscus" in North Carolina and Miami. He is currently in the midst of editing our piece on Russian composer, Alexander Knaifel in Ireland.

Dividing my time between NYC and MIA will be great and while I've now taken on the role of Director of Photography at CM, I'm looking forward to a strong season of pitches for my commercial and advertising clients.

This is my third trip to Ireland and I'm always amazed at the hospitality, conversations, and adventures that take place here each time I come. I'm working with Jorge and Raul Rubiera of Swamp Valve Pictures on a documentary on Alexander Knaifel, Russian composer. His music provided the inspiration to Jorge's movie "Meniscus", which I'm working on as the DP. Everything is going really well and Alexander's music is very modern. The best night so far followed Mr. Knaifel's performance at a really nice pub located high on a hill within the small town of Drogheda, Ireland. The composer, the musicians, and our crew enjoyed a night of local folk music at a charming pub with an endless supply of Guiness and whiskey. Getting the gear and instruments down the hill at sunrise was a symphony of sound in itself.

Swine flu seemed to be plastered all over the news, but at Ollie's, it was business as usual.

CONVERSE & CORNERSTONE Promotion Video Shoot, NYC

I've said it before and I'll say it again... opportunities to work with clients with a good team, visually oriented, and a great rep to boot are fantastic for everyone involved. Just recently I finished putting the final grade on a behind the scenes video I shot for a New York City rock band called "The Flying Machines" sponsored by Converse and Journeys and produced by Cornerstone Promotion. This winning band was selected from a pool of 4800 entries for the national competition. We gathered in a unique recording space in Manhattan called Sear Sound and I documented the nip & tuck of the album under the guidance of Grammy award winning music producer Mario P. Petralia.

I captured all of the HD imagery using the Sony EX-3 coupled with 16mm B&W Kodak 7222 that was captured using a Bolex. The 16mm telecine transfer was performed at DuArt in NYC. The two formats were edited together using Final Cut and graded using Magic Bullet. The final piece will be displayed on the Converse website and distributed within Journey shoe stores nationwide.

Nautica South Beach Triathlon, Miami Beach, FL

The day started off at 4:30 am as I made my way towards 2000 + incredibly fit athletes milling about their Treks and Cannondales. Power Bar wrappers covered the ground and a hint of icy hot permeated through the air. After a quick introduction and the Pledge of Allegiance we marched five blocks on the sand to the sight of an amazing Sunday morning sunrise and the start of the Nautica South Beach Triathlon. I love being challenged at these particular sporting events which require you to capture the thrill of the competition while showcasing the overall ambience of the cities who play host to them.

This shot above was one of the first frames I made at the competition, which features pro-level athletes storming the Atlantic in the first leg of the triathlon. In order to be mobile, but still provide this unique perspective, I boomed my Canon 1Ds Mark II 10 feet above my head utilizing a Manfrotto monopod. In order to trigger the camera I called upon the Pocket Wizard receiver / transmitter in combination with the PocketWizard CM-N3 Motor Cord. I metered for the sunrise, prefocused the camera, and put the lens to manual focus.

In the run that followed towards the water, I barely even realized that I had chased the triathletes well beyond the shoreline and ended up about waist deep in the ocean... A few more steps and it would have been a call to Canon.

The client was extremely happy with the overall take and I look forward to next year's race.

Winter Music Conference Video Documentary, Miami Beach, FL

Every year thousands of dance music enthusiasts converge on the balmy shores of Miami Beach, FL, in the middle of March for a festive fun filled event called the Winter Music Conference. Common Machine Productions tackled this annual event for a web documentary focusing on the New York "Super Club," Pacha. I am the DP and camera operator for CM. For five days we endured the occasional spray found at the Miami Beach pool parties. All that sun was just so warm and nurturing we just had to complain...

The completed 12 minute documentary will be viewed and distributed over the night clubs youtube and commercial website.

Summer Is Just Around the Bend

I was working at my desk a couple of days ago on beautiful day in March when I heard a trumpet blast announcing the arrival of spring and summer... the Mr Softy Ice Cream truck jingle. As a kid growing up in New York summer evenings always concluded with a strawberry shortcake or a vanilla cone topped off with chocolate sprinkles and when I heard that sweet sound I could only think that cold days of winter are behind us. To celebrate this occasion I pulled out a stop motion video I shot in Central Park on an incredibly warm day in Sheep's Meadow, Central Park last July, 2008.

Fashion with Friends, NYC

Friends Elizabeth Marz, makeup artist, and Marissa Waters, stylist, and I got together one recent Saturday afternoon for a shoot on the roof of my building. It was unusually warm for the mid-February day and the sky was a beautiful cadet blue. Inspired by a recent Japanese anime, Marissa pulled a wardrobe fit for Blade runner and Liz complimented the attire with an equally impressive hand at the makeup and hair. In the end, a day intended for fun, turned into a great collaboration... big thanks goes out to Dasha from Elite NYC for bearing the above average but cold temps :)

Sydney, Australia - Music Video Shoot

The crew was packed, the equipment was tested and check out from Panavision, and the crafts were purchased, this could only mean one thing... road trip! After consulting with the local film counsel for locations and two days of scouting, our crew headed approximately 250 miles west of Sydney to the barren town of Narrowmine on the western edge of New South Wales, Australia. We wanted a sparse landscape and isolated roads to serve as the backdrop to the "Raw Style" music video. Capturing the video with the Sony F23 was an amazing experience. The camera, despite her 60 lbs fully loaded was very easy to work with and was very comfortable to work with handheld.

Zeiss Digiprimes (7mm, 10mm, 20mm, 40mm all T/1.6) and Fuji 10-100mm T/1.8 were our lenses of choice. Luke and Paul did a great job developing the common the story boards to our narrative that would run throughout the 3 minute video. In the end we had 4 performance pieces, a narrative, and a dead body in the boot of the car all checked off the list.

The Long Road Home... to get to another marathon - The ING Miami Marathon

38 hours of travel and six ports of call (SYD -> HNL -> LAX -> JFK -> LGA -> MIA) deliver me at the starting line of the ING Miami Marathon for the fourth year in a row. Fighting the jet lag has become a science, but I look forward to shooting the race for ING. 20,000 people are expected... that's a lot of coffee and bananas for the 5 am call time... how are they so pumped so early will continually escape me.

The final days of the Jamie O'Brien documentary finished strong. The weather was cooperating, the work flow was smooth, and the crew had survived the dreaded company move from our first base of operations to our new home located directly on Pipeline Beach... VERY NICE! Working with Tab, Mike, Ryan and Vincent on this project offered an opportunity to make collaborate with true pros.

As things go, the 3 weeks in beautiful Hawaii had to come to an end at some point, however with a very fortunate call from Australia and a quick ticket on Jetstar, I'm off to the even more amazing Sydney Australia.

So the evolution of camera geekology begins with the crawl of the Canon 5D MKII, to speed of the RED One, and to the amazing beauty of the Sony F23 Camera ($300,000 for the body! "Hello B&H, may I get 3 please...haha")and Zeiss Digiprime lenses (my fav... the 7mm T1.6) throught the 10mm-100mm Fuji Cinelens T1.8 . From the ground up, including the strong foundation of the Sachtler 2575 head... Panaivsion has outfitted the music video shoot for Redbak and DJ DreadJuan I am DPing with some pretty nice toyzzzzz.

10 Day Mark, Halfway there and we not turning back... Hawaii Shoot

The halfway mark in anything I do is loaded with a range of emotions depending on the project. Often it's a time to take account of what I've accomplished and definitely see where my short comings fall, tally-up my success stories, and analysis how I can improve on both. My latest project here in Hawaii is no different. The weather, logistics and technical aspects of the job have drained an incredible amount of time from our small, but very talented crew, and definitely stretched our resources, but everyone is staying very focused on making this shoot succeed.

Pro surfer Jamie O'Brien, the waves of the North Shore located on Oahu, Hawaii and a one day power failure equal the recipe for my latest adventure with the crew from Laforet Visuals. The ensemble cast of characters consists of Vincent Laforet, Mike Isler, Tabb Firchau, and Ryan Hughes, and myself. We've been working with the new Canon 5D MarkII, which records 1080p in addition to the RED One (4K HD) camera with a special Wicked Circuits Canon EOS Smart Mount that enables us to shoot the RED utilizing the entire line-up of Canon lenses.

The day we left NYC for the beautiful shores of Hawaii it looked something like this:

The shoot has gotten off to a great start and working with just about every lens Canon makes has been interesting. Vincent has crafted a great story for us to shoot and has provided an equally impressive array of toys, toys, and more toys. He's pretty much Santa this year. To make matters even better Jamie O'Brien is a really chill character and a pro all the way around. I look forward to seeing what we get done.

HSBC Private Bank portrait series for the Designers of the Year

Earlier this year my client, HSBC Private Bank, approached me with an amazing opportunity to create an unlimited number of portraits during an event in the first week of December in Miami, FL, called Design Miami 2008. Miami is bursting with a colorful characters from around the world during this time because this event coincides with Art Basel Miami.

Armed with ProFoto Lighting, a Hasselblad H1 & P25 PhaseONE digital back my team and I began pre-lighting the day before the opening. The portraits ranged from the very well known to the passerby, but all of them will be compiled into a coffee table book to honor the 2008 Designers of the Year, the Campana Brothers from Brazil.

It was a great experience and the images the Hasselblad H1 captured were amazing. I am most impressed with the Phase One software's ability to rescue the detail in the highlight areas of each frame. Thanks to everyone at HSBC, the Campana Brothers, and Design Miami for all your help and support with this project.

Meniscus Short Film Shoot, North Carolina - Part I

For several years my friend and talented Director and Musician Jorge Rubiera has been writing his short film Meniscus. Today we embarked on bringing his story to life on the farms of Fayetteville, North Carolina using the Panasonic AG-HPX170. We have a young but talented cast lead by Jorge as we trod through the streams and cow pastures of the rural countryside. I'm the DP and steadicam operator on the shoot, which will be done over three months. Down home fried chicken, friends, and a great location (I think that's what Jean-Luc Godard said :)

Times Square Shoot starring "The Heights" performer

It was a great day when I photographed Joshua Henry of hit Broadway musical The Heights for Miami Magazine in Times Square on a beautiful Saturday morning in November. We used a Canon 1Ds Mark II and 2 ProFoto 7B packs cranked to nearly full power and a beauty dish for a soft fill to illuminate ?. The sun was slowly sneaking out behind the skyscrapers to the south and we quickly worked to capture the pic before the exposure I was hunting was lost.

This was the 3rd situation we shot that morning and he brought an amazing amount of energy to each situation. I'll be sure to publish the final images once the magazines gets their turn first.

Cameras, Acrobats, and Contortionists OH MY!

A couple of weeks ago fellow photographer and friend Vincent LaForet, a Canon Explorer of Light, mentioned he wanted to shoot another demo video with the highly anticipated CANON 5D Mark II in New York City after the incredible success of REVERIE, his first video shoot.

The Catch... We wanted to be the first to ever fly the still camera on a professional STEADICAM rig. This was my first major production as a steadicam operator since attending the SOA certification course and to be able to shoot with such incredible performers in Manhattan was a total thrill. Flips off monuments, BBoys busting moves on the subway, and contortionists in Times Square are just some of the highlights.

After taking an overnight flight from a commercial gig in Vancouver, Canada, I found myself at the Steadicam Operators workshop certification in Exton, PA. Steadicam operating is a the process of flying a video or movie camera with a graceful fluid motion through a scene. Movies like Rocky, Carlitos Way, Boogie Nights, and Kill Bill and the Shinning serve as some of the best examples of this technique. The rig weighs anywhere from 30 lbs -70 lbs depending on the camera being used. Some of the best world's best are the instructors. More later...

Acquiring a New Client

Throughout my short career (9 years now) I've continually been asked at various times how I've acquired my clients and new work, and I thought this question presented itself as a decent topic for the blog.

First and foremost, as in many other businesses I would have to say that the "referral" has been a crucial element to my success so far... always be professional and never burn a bridge.

However, another method has been targeting the set of clients (magazines, corporations, or ad agencies) I would like to work for and tailoring a photographic presentation specific to their needs and interests. In this case I'll be focusing my portfolio presentation on the Halls of Academia within the New York / Tri-State area.

These institutions are like small corporations with talented in house design teams who often need fresh imagery specific to their University or College. The assignments can call for large scale location or studio shoots as well as documentary / sports photography.

Over the next two weeks I'll keep you posted of my strategy, execution, presentation, and success (I never failed in school, except for Organic Chem, but that's a different story :).

BMW Advertisement - Summer 2008

The arts and entertainment magazine Flavorpill.com partnered with BMW Motors for a cross promotional web advertising campaign in five US cities for the launch of the new 1 Series Coupe. I was commissioned to photograph the magic city of Miami, FL. I was given complete freedom to communicate my impression of the Miami landscape...something that was totally liberating.

My concept (without using photoshop) was to show how Miami has been engulfed within a major construction boom. I've looked at the city as an ongoing development project for sometime... like a page from an urban planners notebook or a "living" scale model. To visually convey this idea I utilized a series of architectural tilt-shift lenses and a shallow depth of field to create the "scale model" look I was going for.

It was a terrific opportunity to look at the downtown area of Miami in a new light. Both clients were both very pleased... always a good thing.

Times Square, Baby!

This is oldie, but I just found the clip. I have to say that this was one of the highlights of my career..."The Big Picture" in Times Square. The shot is of the 2007 NBA MVP Tony Parker and it was commissioned by my client IWC Schaffhausen. Tony is one of their brand ambassadors and was a real professional during the shoot. We photographed him at the Bathhouse Studios in the lower east side of Manhattan, a really great place to shoot with an equally incredible staff.

Feature Film: "The Tested"

Yesterday I started on my second feature film "The Tested," shot here in New York City and New Jersey using the Panaflex Elaine 16mm . I'm being prepped as the 2nd AC on this shoot under the guidance of Chris Scarafile (DP) and directed by Russell Costanzo. This shoot is a change in gears from my last feature and focuses on the trials of a young man in the inner city.

Feature Film: "Watching TV with the Red Chinese"

Ah! The sweet taste of "the wrap" on the final day of shooting on the feature film "Watching TV with the Red Chinese," directed by Shimon Dotan and shot in New York City. I was the 2nd AC on this shoot as well as the Unit Photographer. We shot on the Panavised F900 with a great set of Panavision zoom lenses. The shoot was a great learning experience and an eye opening departure from the world of still photography. My friends Mike Rossetti (DP), Eric Kim (1st AC) and Michael Fuchs (Steadicam Operator) did a great job on the set.

This is one of four multimedia videos I shot for Common Machine Prod. of Miami, FL for the Knight Foundation. Brett O'Bourke (Producer) and I traveled to Akron, OH, Albuquerque, NM, Duluth, MN, and Miami, FL over 2 months to complete this project, which encompassed video, still photography, and time lapse to create a multilayered presentation for the Knight Foundation's print and online annual report. The foundation gives away more than $100 million a year in grants to meet the broadly defined mission of "meeting the information needs of communities in a democracy," though their reach is even more expansive than that.

In another homage to the legendary Mr. Will Farrell... Brett O'Bourke of Common Machine Prod. and I couldn't help but quote every line from "Talladega Nights," as we packed up the gear and embarked on our next project called "Disappearing Speedways." Our destination was the Orlando Speedway on the outskirts of Orlando, FL. NASCAR this is not, but that's exactly what gives these small tracks their charm and timelessness. Over the course of the next year we will be shooting this documentary all over the South as we make our way around this disappearing circuit. Australia Video Shoot

I packed my gear and headed off to Sydney Australia for the month of November 2007 in order to work on my reel with the assistance of my very good friend Nic Godoy of Panavision, Australia. I used a Panasonic P2 with a PNS adaptor and Cooke lenses for most of the landscape work and a Panavised Varicam for a beauty shoot. I accomplished my time lapse using my Canon 1Ds Mark II and slapped it all together on Final Cut. We shot all over NSW, but my fondest memories of the country are of the people and friends I made while working there. It was HEEPS fun!

Solo Gallery Show - Ordinary People 2006

In March of 2006 the Miami Design District and collector Craig Robins offered me the opportunity to put together my first solo gallery show. The "Ordinary People" show was born from the extraordinary characters and personalities I've been fortunate to meet through 6 years of traveling and work. Over 500 people made their way through my space.

Will Farrell & National Football Championships

Despite the fact that "Step Brother's" is the worst comedy I've seen this year, it's no secret that I'm a huge Will Farrell fan and when the opportunity came to have a chat and snap this pick at the Fedex Orange Bowl National Championship game in 2005, I couldn't resist. Farrell is a USC alum and his team eventually went on to conquer Oklahoma. It was a great game and one of my pics ran the length of the front page of the Miami Herald's sports page the following day. However, the highlight was definitely meeting "Mr Ron Burgandy" himself.
